Best albums in 2012

Postby Max Power » 07 Feb 2013, 12:52

The 3 I'm convinced I'll never get tired of:

1. Demoncy - Enthroned is the night
2. Lord Wind - Ales Stenar
3. Dead Can Dance - Anastasis

*Surprises of the year : Winglord - The Chosen One & Grimes - Visions

*Also enjoyed: Magma, Big Big Train, Incantation, Desecresy, The Flower Kings, John Talabot, Lambchop, Thevetat, Anglagard, Grizzly Bear, Tame Impala, Swans, Spiritualized, Angel Witch, Dérketa, Master, Julia Holter, Beach House & Frank Ocean. (btw: I think BBT made the best "prog" this year).

What are your choices? 8-)

I'm afraid my choices would be so terribly obvious that if I listed them here, everybody would think I'm just taking the proverbial.

1. Big Big Train - English Electric Part One *****
1. Steven Wilson - Get All You Deserve *****
(split first position)
-------------------------------------------------------
3. Threshold - March Of Progress ****
4. Lee Ritenour - Rhythm Sessions ****
5. Black Country Communion - Afterglow ***½
6. Circus Maximus - Nine ***½
7. Shadows Fall - Fire From The Sky ***½
8. Testament - Dark Roots Of Earth ***½
9. Katatonia - Dead End Kings ***½
10. The Flower Kings - Banks Of Eden *** (**½ if you count the bonus disc)

Biggest disappointments:

Albert Cummings - No Regrets
All That Remains - A War You Cannot Win
Michael Burks (R.I.P) - Show Of Strength
Cloudscape - New Era
Hasse Fröberg Musical Companion - Powerplay
Kamelot - Silverthorn
Renegade Creation - Bullet
Rush - Clockwork Angels
Wintersun - Time One

2012 was quite lame, but it seems like 2013 is going to be a lot more interesting. There'll be new releases from Steven Wilson, Robben Ford, Big Big Train, Solution .45, Shadow Gallery (hopefully), Spock's Beard, Soilwork,Amon Amarth etc.

Hmm less TFK fanboyism as usual on the GoD. I guess I'm not the only one who rates BBT higher this year. I'm still aware that Banks of Eden (just like the sum, paradox hotel and utf) might be a grower for me ^^. We'll see in a few years right?

Let me see; 1. TFK 2. BBT 3. Hasse? Don't know about any others though :D

2013 albums I'm very likely to purchase :

My bloody valentine - M B V (already released with raving reviews, haven't heard it myself unfortunately)
Spock's beard - Brief Nocturnes And Dreamless Sleep
Birth A.D. - I blame you
Big Big Train - English Electric pt 2
Summoning - Old Mornings dawn

I might sense potential from Steven Wilson, Daft Punk, Janelle Monae, Black Sabbath, Arcade Fire, Deerhunter, Vampire Weekend...Others: Kraftwerk? Transatlantic? Gorguts perhaps?

Something along those lines, embarrassing as it is. The others would probably be Echolyn, Glass Hammer, It Bites, Magma, Panzerpappa, Änglagård...

Clockwork angels and banks of eden came out about the same time, which was difficult - knowing which to choose. I guess this shows how much i liked Banks of Eden as being obsessed with rush for over 30 years, nothing else usually gets a look in when a new Rush album comes out. Those two albums are the albums that stood out last year for me
Don't ask me, I'm just making it up as i go along
