The LONGPLAYERS

Postby wowie » 22 Oct 2013, 12:48

so here it is, the longplayer thread :D

first of all, lets define.
i would say over 15 min is longplayer!?

so we definitley have:
Humanizzimo
Stardust We Are
The Truth ....
Devils Playground
Love Soupreme
Drivers Seat
Monsters & Men
Love is the only answer
Numbers

then there is
I am the sun - is a longplayer for me, and im not talking about Pt.1 i would fuse em and see it as one longplayer.
Garden of Dreams - i have some problems seeing it as one longplqayer, as there are really big differences between the parts .... i would really like to hear your opinions!!??
Big Puzzel Live Version - any opinions??
Echoes of Dr. King - ??
anything more ... betcha wanna ... ??

so my rating would be:
1. Devils Playground
2. I am the Sun/Love Soupreme/The Truth ...
(GoD)
3. Numbers/SWA
4. Monsters & Men
(Echoes of Dr. King ;) )
5. Drivers Seat
6. Love is the only answer
(Big Puzzle)
7. Humanizzimo

i think i never rated DP that high, but i listened to all of them the last days and oh boy, this song is so so rich, epic and freaky ... prog at its best!!!
just the start shows how extremly symphonic it is, then the jazz prog stuff (11.30 + 13.00)) is some of the best, including excellent Wallander contribution .... Daniels vocals in the refrain are killer and also Roines lines fitting just so so good .... the drums, well ZOOOOLTAAAAANNNN .....
even if the consistency is maybe higher on LS, TRUTH, I am the sun, Numbers ... and even M&M ;) ... DP is just so strong!!!!
No beauty can hold up to this power ;)

btw my double nominations are necessary, i think thats the only way how you can respect the goodness in all the songs ;)

the rating is oc a mix of production, bands playing and the "richness" of music.

oh and, M&M is definitley not the weakest for me anymore - so "discussion" isnt senseless ;)

Cool idea for a thread! I think what distinguishes a true prog fan is the love for these Longplayers. It amuses me when you mention the length of a song and people roll their eyes or can't believe someone would actually listen to a song that long. Musical ADHD, so sad.

My top ten rankings:
1. Humanizzimo
2. The Truth Will Set You Free
3. Love Supreme
4. Love is the Only Answer
5. Stardust We Are
6. I am the Sun
7. Monsters & Men
8. Driver's Seat
9. Numbers
10. Big Puzzle

Sorry-Devil's Playground is not one of my favorites. Too much incohesiveness for my tastes.
Humanizzimo's five parts build up well- I love the basic theme, and it has always had an emotional draw to it. I especially like the live version, with Daniel's contribution a standout. However, the studio version is awesome as well.
Love is the Only Answer is so compelling with lyrics, outstanding keyboard also. The live version again is outstanding on Tour Kaputt, but the studio version is very comparable.
Numbers is a bit too dark for me- when it comes together and explodes at approximately the 17 minute mark, I feel the life in it, but it doesn't give me the best feeling overall.
I am hopeful that the light shone on Love Supreme, The Truth etc. won't be extinguished in further releases.
BTW, would Silent Inferno qualify for a Longplayer? I think it should be added....

interesting thoughts!!
what do you mean with incohesiveness??
as you can always make out parts and those are well shifted together i think, in every tfk LP ..... as incohesiveness is also a must for experimental music and therefor for prog too i think. The incohesivness of the mid section of Drivers Seat makes it just so good.
But well i think i know what you mean, if you dont like it i cant do that much :D

the problem is also, to select the good parts ... as some things only come up if you become a bit more loose and free .... i mean jazz is so important for prog!
btw the acutal release is far to "cohesive" for me ;)

we can also say Longplayer is over 12 (or 10) minutes, maybe thats better?
so we can include some more tracks and get some more richness in here.
Silent Inferno
Monster Within
Tower One
World of Adventures
Circus brimstone
Minor Giant Steps
Road to Sanctuary
City of Angels
One more time
Life in motion

the ten's:
The Flower King
Dissonata
Retropolis
There is more to this world
In the eyes of the world
Deaf Numb Blind
Calling Home
Last Minute on Earth
End on a high note

some more?

btw
my problem with Humanizzimo is, that the production is not that strong for me .... the drums are not as versatile, the synth sounds a bit hmmmm at parts .... well :D ... i think they developed later one and so getting better
... there is not that much power and energy like on the other ones .... but on the other side ...there are many wonderful chilled passages which is of course very good! maybe the most chilled LP.

I just started a thread about this subject (albeit for songs over the ten minute mark.) There are only eleven FK songs that meet the +15 minute criteria as opposed to 34 that run over 10 minutes. So here is how I rank them!

1) Love Supreme
2) The Truth Will Set You Free
3) Stardust We Are
4) Numbers
5) Monsters And Men
6) I Am The Sun
7) Love Is The Only Answer
8) Garden Of Dream
9) Devil's Playground
10) Humanizzimo
11) Driver's Seat

Interesting. What order would I put them in I wonder? Let's try this:

1) Garden Of Dreams
2) Stardust We Are
3) The Truth Will Set You Free
4) Devil's Playground
5) I Am The Sun
6) Love Supreme
7) Driver's Seat
8) Love Is The Only Answer
9) Numbers
10) Humanizzimo
11) Monsters And Men

All great tracks though and my order could change at any time, and probably will. Garden Of Dreams is the ultimate for me though, and is my first equal epic of all time jointly with Supper's Ready. Magnificent! :)

I love each individual section of Devil's Playground. The only (very minor) complaint I have is that each part seems isolated from the whole without as much connective tissue. Be that as it may, it's an awesome piece of music and really shows a darker side to the band that I think is quite refreshing. I mean, I love all the peace and love vibes from the boys but even YES had The Gates Of Delirium.
