Fantasia is much better in my book!! (I'm listening to The Lonely Heartbeat right now, just to confirm this. Average stuff.)

Now: Genesis albums - We Can't Dance or Calling All Stations ?

Calling All Stations! I am tempted to say it's their best post-Duke album and would really have wanted to see the band carry on further on this path.

Next, live entertainment -
a tribute band or the "real thing" with just one key member left in the line-up?

I listened to both in live, and they have left me with my mouth open, but one you back to the past and not create anything new (The Music Box) and the other a forward (Steve Hackett). Steve also is the best guitarist (and more imaginative composer) of Genesis. In this case, there is no comparison, because Steve Hackett band not interpreted as "Genesis". It is more than that.

...And now it's your turn to ask a question Carlos! ;)

(Just out of interest, I'm not sure which I'd choose out of tribute band or original with just one member. I will say this though. Back in, I think, 1994, I saw both The Australian Pink Floyd and Pink Floyd themselves live. Floyd were excellent of course, but I did get the distinct impression at the time that they were just 'going through the motions', playing the same old stuff for the umpteenth time. The Aussies, on the other hand, were pretty much perfect and eager to impress. When I closed my eyes they could easily have been the real Floyd. If I'm honest, I preferred them to the real Floyd, even though the real Floyd had Gilmour, Wright and Mason in their ranks ;) )

Looks like I'm the only one who's not overtly fond of tribute bands. In fact, I find it extremely difficult to figure out what's the attraction of these groups. They're just not my idea of what bands and music-making are about - I've got no interest whatsoever in seeing or hearing any of them, no matter how good they are at what they do.

Well, seeing as I've never heard the American version, I'll have to go with the UK one! ;)

May as well carry on until Carlos comes out of hibernation, so:

Guitarists - Mike Holmes or John MItchell?

Interesting... I would have thought that a John Sykes fan like yourself would automatically prefer the remixed American version with guitar overdubs by Sykes.

I know, it's a bit odd. I just never got round to hearing it. I may well rectify that at some point in the future. ;)

Looks like everyone's lost interest in this thread now. My last this or that poser remains unanswered. I have to admit I'm surprised it lasted as long as it did, people have more important things to do than tune in to the desperate posts of a man on the very edge of society......

The right one, to even things out on the left/right axis.

Prog year -
1979 or 1989? Please provide something to back your choice (song, album, event).

Difficult one that, I was still listening to music in '79 so will probably go for that because, by '89, I wasn't really listening to anything. No other reason really. Only got back into music in general in the mid to late nineties. Not a very satisfactory answer for you, I know, but, for me, prog was on the way out from '77 onwards and only really came back in with The Flower Kings (though I did like early Marillion and Pendragon, and then Porcupine Tree :) )

Ok, how about this:

Prog genres - Symphonic prog or neo prog?

Symphonic prog all the way!!! This is personal, but I've never understood what's so great about neo-prog...

Nest question: Do you prefer to listen to music through headphones or speakers ?

Speakers. I'll resort to headphones only when it's absolutely necessary, ie. to allow late-night listening sessions or to shield myself from other people's noise (as drilling and hammering seem to be incredibly popular pastimes among my neighbours, the necessity occurs considerably more often than I would prefer).

Your CD choice -
original or remastered?

Depends on the remaster. If it's very compressed, with no variation in the dynamics, ie: continually loud and in your face, then I'll go with the original. If, however, the remaster makes the original brighter, with more clarity in the mix, in the individual instruments and also gives it a bit more oomph and power then I'll go with that. I love the Genesis box set remasters - not everyone does though - and other remasters, such as Marillion and Starcastle and Yes, but others do nothing for me, such as Pink Floyd and Rush. I can detect hardly any improvement in those. Anyway......

Roine Stolt albums - Hydrophonia or The Flower King?

Hydrophonia is outstanding, but The Flower King is one of those rare life-changing albums, so from my point of view the comparison isn't really fair to begin with. Having said that, never mind fair, I serve The Flower King.

GTRists, ie. the two Steves -
Hackett or Howe?

Hmm, another awkward one. I've got to go with Steve here...... :D

Ok, enough tomfoolery. :D Mr Hackett for me, even though I think Mr Howe is the better technical player. Mr Hackett is, for me, by far the better songwriter and even his vocals are preferable - not often you hear that said about him! His classical guitar work is wonderful and his electric work is always interesting and he's influenced many other players over the years. ;)

Bass players - John Wetton or Jack Bruce?

Wetton was phenomenal in his 70's prime, but still I feel obliged to go with Bruce here. He was "The Bass Man".

Since it's weekend now, let's try something slightly more light-hearted -

Captains -
Beefheart or Sensible?

To make this three-pronged puzzler a proper "this or that" entry, I broke it into three separate questions -

SB or DT - SB
DT or TFK - TFK
SB or TFK - TFK

Bands from non-English speaking countries -
vocals in English or in their own language?
