This or That game!

Postby Chessman » 10 Aug 2015, 19:36

Not sure if this will take off or not but it's just a bit of fun so no worries if it dies a death. This is a game we have going over on the Genesis forum. It's very simple. You name two things, whether it's albums by the same group, or two bass players, or two composers etc and the next person chooses which one he or she likes the best. Then that person in turn suggests two things to choose from. We've mainly been doing albums so I'll get the ball rolling with this one:

Genesis - Selling England By The Pound or Foxtrot?

Foxtrot, by a whisker

Glass half empty or half full?

(Sorry if this is beyond the scope of the game, Chessman.)

I would say: half empty AND half full.

Now, the question is: Tomas Bodin or Lalle Larsson? (as composers, or keyboard players... your choice!)

My choice would have been: Tomas (as composer) and Lalle (as player)....

Now I let someone else decide for the MaxPower dilemma!!

I nominate Robert Fripp who's still married to his first wife over Hackett, a two-time divorcee.

How about a little poke in the hornet's nest for the next round:

Pink Floyd albums -

The Final Cut or The Momentary Lapse of Reason

As a staunch vegetarian I'm going to have to say John Williams, T Bone is out of the question for me.

Next, two groups that don't often get mentioned in the same sentence -

I'm tempted to say Heat That but it sounds too much like an instruction to a chef's underling so I'll go with: Take That ;)

As for NotSteven's poser, I'll go with Alan Morse

Sadly, no.

Google says that they are with Pendragon and IQ respectively, but I know very little about these two bands (so I surely cannot compare their keyboardists!). I own 3 Pendragon albums and 3 IQ albums, but I barely listen to them... It might be related to me not loving the "neo-prog" stuff... ??

Ever is one of my all-time favourite albums (and a very special one at that, being one of those crucial early-to-mid-90's releases - along with The Flower King and a couple of others - that helped reignite my somewhat waned interest in the state of prog), so I'm not going to agree with you here, Chessman - I'm forever for Ever.

Not really familiar with Marillion.

In a Glass House is another all-time favourite of mine, so Free Hand hasn't really got a leg to stand on, so to speak (good though it is).

How about the two Marillion albums (see above)? Anyone?

As a GG lover, I have never been a fan of In A Glass House... so I prefer Free Hand... or any other GG 1970-1974 album! ;)

It always surprises me when I see In A Glass House as the "best GG album" on Progarchives.

Next question: Transatlantic albums - The Whirlwind or Kaleidoscope ?

Just a little aside while we wait for some fearless forum member to tackle the still unanswered questions (here's looking at you, Chessman - even though I know what your Marillion choice would be), what do you think of GG's Interview, projeKct? I have always found that one somewhat uninspiring, and in a way I think that I actually prefer the much-maligned The Missing Piece over it.

Mmmm... good question...

Here is an attempted ranking of GG albums:
- The Power and the Glory (1974)
- Octopus (1972)
- Acquiring the Taste (1971)
- Three Friends (1972)
- Free Hand (1975)
- Gentle Giant (1970)
- The Missing Piece (1977)
- Interview (1976)

- In a Glass House (1973)
- Civilian (1980)
- Giant for a Day! (1978)

You can see that the two albums you suggested are very close in my mind. But also, I must admit that I listen more often to my "top 6" than my "bottom 5"...

OK now we're listing GG favorites...can't resist...
- In a Glass House
- Free Hand
- The Power and the Glory
- The Missing Piece
- Civilian (imho a masterpiece, if not as proggy)
- Three Friends
- Octopus
- Interview
- Giant For a Day!
- Gentle Giant
- Acquiring the Taste ( never did acquire the taste for this one- only like the cover)

Everyone to their own likes!
I had the good fortune to see GG play in a small club in Tulsa, Oklahoma in 1975! Amazing! :D

In an attempt to save this thread from straying too far away from what was originally intended (as it is clearly my fault that it has come to this, I feel it is my duty to try and put things back in order and steer the discussion back in the right track) -

Ok, now that I have returned from a few days away in Eastbourne (with my wonderful wife of course), I can answer maybe two of the three questions: Script or Misplaced - I love them both but will go with Misplaced Childhood. (Did that surprise you, NotSteven?) Next, The Whirlwind or Kaleidoscope - got to go with Kaleidoscope here. (Another surprise maybe?) Sadly, not being a GG fan, I can't attempt to answer the last poser. No doubt someone else can though, any takers?

My question - Yes albums - Fragile or Relayer?

Relayer, even though Fragile includes two of my favourite Yes songs (South Side of the Sky and Heart of the Sunrise)

Bugger! I was sure you would choose Script!

Porcupine Tree

Next:
The Tangent albums - The World That We Drive Through or A Place In The Queue?

(To be fair to NotSteven, some days I would choose Script For A Jester's Tear, depends what mood I'm in ;).)

Mmm... let's think... I slightly prefer A Place In The Queue, I also think it's the best "Stolt-less Tangent album". But The World That We Drive Through is really good too. So that was hard to choose!

Now, for a change... Seasons: Summer or Winter ? ;)
